#PrayForBaltimore

Disclaimer: Let me start out by saying that I love culture, and I love all races. I do not discriminate because of color, and I do not make excuses for others/myself because of color. I love being an American and the fact that we, as Americans, can do and say as we please.

That being said, let me vent.

My idea of "Pray for Baltimore" and others' idea of "Pray for Baltimore" are two completely different things. Other's might "pray" that justice is met. I do too. Other's might "pray" that the African American community continues to speak out for what they believe. I do too. Other's might "pray" that equality is sought. I do too. The difference is that I pray that these people learn to do all of these things in the correct way. A way that will actually bring change and justice to everyone. They "pray" white law enforcement is "dealt with." I pray that no one gives just cause for a Police Officer to take any action that would lead to controversy.

I'm not saying Freddie Gray was guilty and needed to be arrested. I'm not saying he was innocent. I'm saying there was some reason that it had happened. He had to have done something for police officers to think that he was a threat, either to himself or people around him. There had to be some reason that the officers decided to cuff him and take him in to custody.

I'm not saying that the police officers did everything perfectly either. There are some bumps in their story, and some information that seems to be missing. The only reason people think police officers are "bad" is because they are either on their naughty list, or that is all they see/hear about through the media. The only reason people think African American's are the only people killed by police officers is because that is all they see in the media. I don't think a lot of people understand how much the media influences our lives. They show us what we want to see/what they want us to see.

People standing up for someones death should not end up being classified as a "state of emergency" where the National Guard is called in against our own kind! Hurting 15 officers because of the death of one person does what? We don't even know how Grey died. What if it was an officer? Then why hurt a bunch of inncent ones? Why burn buildings? Why tear up public poperty? What in the world does that accomplish?? What if he was hurt before the incident with the police? What if the police had absolutely nothing to do with his death? That would be a new idea for a lot of people...

Flashback Friday: Disney World with my Best Friend

Walt Disney World with my Best Friend

Walt Disney World. Easily the absolute happiest place on Earth. I don't care how old you are, whenever you step inside those gates, you become 5 years old again. Everything is literally so magical and exciting. And I got to experience it (for my 5th time...) with my best friend Sydney (https://sydneyschurman.wordpress.com/) by my side.

We were absolute children when we saw the firework show in Magic Kingdom and the laser light projections on the castle. Every different movie that was portrayed was like the best thing in the world. We sang along to all the songs that played in the background, and we were louder than all the small children around us.

We also got to experience some really cool things while we were there. We went the week surrounding New Years Eve. The first day of the year held SO many exciting things for us. We got to see Mickey (and he talks now! His mouth moves and he talks!!) and do magic tricks with him (probably my favorite part, because he picked me!)

We also got to go to Pizza Planet that night. Dream. Come. True. The food might not have been the best (or the cheapest) but I mean what do you expect? I still got a keepsake cup! :)

As you can see (in pictures below) we love Toy Story. And of course we made matching shirts (that Buzz and Woody commented on, no big deal.)

After our dinner we went to watch the last of the Christmas light show that was happening that night at the park.

I am 100% sure that this day was one of the best days of my life.

Our trip also included selfies with Princesses, watching a proposal, and so many other memories that I will never forget! I would TOTALLY reccommed going to WDW with your best friend one day. I don't care if you're a kid, if you have a kid, or if your kids have kids, go.

Update

In the next few months, a whole hell of a lot is going to change for me. No more college. No more drinking every night of the week. I'll have to get a big girl job (working on it). No more money from Mommy. No more frivolous spending, because I'll have bills and rent I'll need to pay.

So, in the next few months, I have some very exciting things that I will be doing, and that I will be walking you all through. Things like:

  • The cruise
  • Finding a job
  • Finding an apartment
  • Decorating the apartment
  • Getting a puppy! (maybe...fingers crossed)
  • Graduation
  • Moving
And that's just as of right now. I hope that in the midst of this chaos, I will be able to post as much as I am wanting, but we shall see!

Tips: Applying for Jobs

http://www.wcu.edu/WebGraphicsNew/Kimmel_School_HireMePlease.jpg

As an about-to-be-college-grad, there are a lot of things that I have to start thinking about. Like money, and how I'm going to get it. The solution is obviously a job. I mean come on, I went to college for 4 years, might as well put that education to some kind of use. So let me tell you what I did...

1. Resume.

  • You might not have much of any experience, or even past jobs. But what you do have, you have to make it look worth wile. So you babysat all four summers of your college career? Cool, you managed small people and time, organized events. So you worked at McDonald's? Perfect! You got experience working in customer service and you operated the cash register. Use interesting words, and reword phrases to make them sound more business like.
  •  I was an RA (residential adviser) for a dorm my junior year of college. As a program, I had the Career Services staff come in and look over our resumes. I had them see what I had, make comments and corrections, and make sure that it was ready for the business world. This has REALLY helped me so far. I have gotten lots of comments from prospective employers about the quality of my resume.

2, Connections.

When I started thinking about applying to places, I emailed a lot of people through my university: Career Services, my adviser, one of my professors, and a university employee that I used to work with. I asked them if they knew of any companies in the area that would be hiring. A lot of businesses will give internship or job information to Universities, because newly graduated students are a huge target for prospective employees. I had also asked my parents and others who I had previously conversed with about possible opportunities.

3. Applying.

  • When applying, apply anywhere and everywhere. You might not be very interested in a position, but you don't know who will be interested (or not) in you. Like, it could end up being your only option. If not, at least you have some experience going through interviews and getting your name out there.
  • Also, make sure that you save information on the job that you are applying for. You can use the points that they are looking for, in your interview. It shows that you paid attention and if you can prove you have certain qualities, they will be more likely to hire you. It's what they are looking for and its something you have.
  • When you hear back from a company, in either an email or a phone call, make sure that you respond as quickly as possible. Most places will be getting multiple people applying, and they will beat you to the punch. You have to show them that you are serious about wanting to work with them, and that you are a timely individual.

4. Interviews.

  • When you go in to an interview, always take a copy of your resume, you never know if they will have a copy of yours printed, or if they will ask for one.
  •  A tip I have heard a few times is to wear the same outfit to all of your first interviews, especially if you are a girl. This way, you don't get confused on what you wore, where, and accidentally repeat outfits to the same place. In the beginning, if you're like me, you don't have a whole lot of options to choose from anyways. But wearing the same dress twice would be embarrassing, and it might seem like you (and your closet) are not prepared for the job world.
  • Before you go in to an interview, look up as much information about the company as you can...and use that information in the interview! Make sure that they know you know what you're talking about, and that you were interested enough in the company to go out of your way to look into what they do. This will also help you to think of questions to ask while in the interview. Which leads me to my next point...
  • Ask questions. A lot of them. This is another way to let the employer know that you are interested. What's the average work day like? Whats the starting salary? Would I be working in this office? What are some projects you are currently working on? Anything you can think of, ask it!

Is This Real Life?

So shit is getting real and starting to hit the fan. I graduate next month. Like in 37 days. Today my best friend is moving away to her big girl internship that is like 13 hours away (might as well be out of the country at this point.) I have applied for graduation and I am emailing some people I know about potential jobs and thinking about getting myself an apartment...like what?! When did I become this old and grown.

The Dream: I want to find a marketing job in South (or maybe North) Carolina right after graduaction, move their with my boyfriend and have the absolutely most perfect life.

The Reality: I will probably be stuck around here for a couple years while I get my life together. What if I don't find a career job right out of school? What then? Work at Target? Victoria's Secret? Host tables at Old Chicago? Strip for money?!

I cried today because someone broke one of my shot glasses. It wasn't even my favorite (but it was up there.) How am I supposed to pay bills and have a salary when I cry over a broken shot glass?

What is life? How do I real world? Where do I even start?!
